Alex Bamford Medic

Born in a military hospital in Aldershot, Alex grew up in Surrey on the North Downs, spending most of his time falling out of trees or submerged in the River Wey. Alex graduated from Cardiff University in 2004 with a degree in Physiotherapy (although it felt more like a degree in rowing and Alex is now currently studying Medicine in Norwich at the University of East Anglia.
 
Alex loves the outdoors and has done from an early age completing the three peaks challenge at just 16! He represented Great Britain at the European Duathlon Championships and won silver in his age group in 2008. He is a keen ultramarathon and Iron man competitor. Alex took part in and survived The OMM 2009.
 
Spent 5 months in Borneo in 2003, 2 months on expedition in the rainforest and 3 months teaching english and science in the Kelabit highlands and is a Sports ambassador for Norfolk. He has an advanced open water diving qualification and a Level 1 triathlon coach. Alex’s future goals are to row across the atlantic and to complete the Arch to Arc triathlon..... as well as making sure that he successfully qualifies as a doctor somewhere in between.

Alison Chambers Medic

Ali graduated from medical school in Newcastle in 2004, and has since endeavoured to combine her love of travel and mountaineering with her job. She is currently working full time as a GP in the North East, but spends any spare time she can run, climbing and mountaineering her way around the British Isles.
 
Through her Scouting connections, Ali regularly provides medical cover and advice for some of their UK events and international trips, and has also worked as a medic on a number of expeditions, including those to Arctic Greenland, Norway and India. She has also gained medical experience in the tropics of Vanuatu and Tanzania, and having completed her diploma in tropical medicine is currently plotting to spend more time working in the developing world.

Alison Cook Medic

Alison graduated from Birmingham University in 1998. She has a varied career working as a GP with a specialist interest in asylum seeker and refugee health, family planning and hospital emergency medicine. She has worked on expeditions across the globe with various organisations including Raleigh International and Across the Divide.
 
She has a keen interest in humanitarian work and tropical medicine and has worked with Médecins Sans Frontières in Niger and Liberia. In her spare time she prefers to be active and outdoors - so living in her home country of Wales provides the perfect playground.
 

Alison Janzen Medic

Alison was born in Yorkshire where she lived until going to the University of Bristol to study Medicine in 1990. Alison’s interest in travel began once she left school and inter-railed around Europe. During her University holidays she went backpacking around Turkey, Botswana and Zimbabwe. Alison specialises in paediatrics and adolescent medicine and also has significant experience in adult medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology.

Amy Hughes Medic

With a passion for both pre-hospital care and adrenaline sports, Amy thought the best way to achieve this was through involvement in expedition medicine, skiing and the TA! Since graduating from Nottingham University in 2003 she has spent weeks circling the skies of New Zealand with a rescue helicopter; months submerged in the Indian Ocean in Madagascar; days exploring the Belizean Jungle removing ticks from various locations; weeks engulfed in mud in the Borneo jungle and days spent trekking across the desert in Namibia. On a more sedate challenge she spent 3 months completing the Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene in Liverpool. Currently, she is part way through her year rotation in Emergency Medicine and Intensive Care at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge.

Andy McAlea Medic

Born and went through High School/College in Salford and then went onto Liverpool Medical School. Andy has now been qualified for 15 years during which time has worked in various hospitals working in Medicine, Ophthalmology, A + E, Anesthetics and is currently dividing his time between general practice and the local minor injuries unit. Holder of BLS, ATLS and PHTLS certificates, Andy has also spent 18 months working in New Zealand, been a Ships Doctor on a transatlantic yacht race and is the Team Doctor for the Penrith Mountain Rescue Team as well as an examiner for the Lake district mountain rescue teams. Travelled as an expedition Doctor to Nepal, Patagonia, Namibia, South Africa, Chilie and Peru. Recent trips have included Iceland and Greece to teach Mountain rescue medicine, an off road cycle across the centre of Iceland and a trip to climb Mt Blanc and experience the delights of acute mountain sickness. Andy’s interests include winter climbing, mountain biking, photography and mountain medicine.

Anna-Marie Geraghty Medic

Anna studied medicine at Newcastle University managing to sneak in lots of exciting travels to Africa and SE Asia wherever possible between lectures! After graduating in 2000, she escaped the NHS A&E department for the shores of Sydney for a year before gaining her first experience of expedition medicine on a 3 month jungle expedition to Borneo. From then on she was hooked and started working for ATD in 2003. After a break to do a ski season in 2007, she settled down to work as a GP for the MOD and is currently studying for a masters in Sports Medicine. Anna loves the outdoor lifestyle and is a keen skier, surfer and sailor.

Arno Schonken Medic

A born and bred South African, he completed his medical school training at the University of Pretoria. This was followed by a year in the United Kingdom working from Stranraer to Worthing doing locums. Where he fell in love with the Lake District and a fabulous exchange rate that helped to make a dent in those study loans. Returning to African soil he completed a GP vocational training program in Durban which opened doors to rural Natal, working in different small hospitals, running mobile clinics and with the emergency helicopter service of the area. Not to mention working on the surfing skills and hiking in the Drakensberg Mountains. In 2003 he became a ships doc first on the Marco Pole, since then working on different vessels cruising from the Antarctic to the Arctic where treating a fractured leg to chasing a leopard seal is all in a days work. In his time not sailing the seven seas he joined the ATD team. This way he can combine medicine while travelling and explore those other bits of the world.

Bentley Waller Medic

Bentley qualified as a doctor in 2004 and started working for ATD in 2006 with expeditions to Nepal, Brazil, China and Morocco, as well UK events. He joined the Royal Navy as a medical officer in 2007 and spent a year at sea, with his last deployment spent chasing pirates off the Horn of Africa. Bentley is now training in anaesthetics, with an interest in pre-hospital care, and is enjoying being back at home in Hampshire and experiencing the joys (and sleepless nights) of being a new dad.

Caroline Knox Medic

Caroline qualified in Medicine at Newcastle in 1993, and has worked in various specialties, including anaesthetics. A planned six months abroad turned into two and a half years; this included extensive travelling, 2 Raleigh International Expeditions (one as Chief Medic), mountaineering on Mount Cook and a stint with Mount Hutt Ski Patrol in New Zealand. After a Masters in Sports Medicine Caroline moved to the Lake District to complete her GP training and now works part-time in Keswick. Caroline has been a Medical Officer with Across the Divide on thirteen expeditions in four different continents and in 2004 she was the Medical Officer for the Richard Lander Expedition in Nigeria. She and the Police Expedition Society traced the route of an oft-forgotten British Explorer - Richard Lander: following the River Niger for 700km. Caroline has also lectured for the Newcastle University student selected Wilderness Medicine module, Liverpool School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine Expedition Medicine course and the International Mountain Guide qualification at Glenmore Lodge.In 2002, she and her husband, expedition medic Dr. Sean Hudson, helped ATD directors Mark and Karen Hannaford establish Expedition and Wilderness Medicine Caroline and Sean now have three children; the oldest two have already experienced several months travelling in Costa Rica and Borneo. The addition of number three is quite recent so Caroline is more UK based at the moment.

Catherine Buckland Medic

Catherine is a commercial diving instructor working in Plymouth. Originally from Northampton her love of travelling stems from a childhood of camping. Catherine's family sails and she enjoy's kayaking so it seemed only natural that she should start diving during her University course and continue it on into her professional career. An interest in diving medicine led to Catherine completing her Diver Medic and Emergency Medic Course. Relatively new to ATD Catherine hopes to continue doing events next year.

Catriona Webster Medic

After qualifying as a nurse Catriona spent 18 months working on an acute admissions ward, specialising in Coronary Care at University College London. She then moved to infectious and tropical diseases where she has been working for the past 18 months. During this time Catriona has completed a diploma in tropical nursing, a travel medicine course, an advanced life support course and a specialist expedition medicine and travel medicine course. In September 2004 Catriona spent two weeks as part of a small, highly skilled medical team supporting 70 international athletes competing in a 200km marathon through the Amazon delta, which was a particularly challenging assignment working as part of a well co-ordinated team requiring considerable personal initiative.

Corbus Smit Medic

Corbus is Namibian by birth having been born in Aranos, Namibia and growing up in Namibias great outdoors. He studied medicine at the Paul Roos Gimnasium in Stellenbosch, South Africa. He has spent then spent his time working as a General Practioner for the last 4 years both in state/government hospitals and private practice in both South Africa and Namibia. His keen interest in sport and all things outdoors led he to Across the Divide and he has been the expedition medic on numerous South Africa expeditions.

Dave Murdoch Medic

Prior to joining ATD in 2007, Dave’s background has been in prehospital emergency care, which began in 1991 when he joined Dorset Ambulance Service. During his carer he has worked alongside rescue teams in Switzerland, worked on a Helicopter Emergency Medical Service and served within a trauma unit in South Africa. More recently, he spent 3 years living and working in Central Asia, with his family, helping to redevelop an Emergency Medical Service. In 2008 he completed a degree in Emergency and Urgent Care, and currently works as an Emergency Care Practitioner/Paramedic in Dorset. Always up for a challenge, he has tried his hand at a variety of activities from parachuting to diving, mountaineering to orienteering, but has yet to settle on one alone.

Dave Weinstein Medic

Dave is a South London boy and stayed in London for medical school. He has always loved travelling and spent time in Costa Rica and Malawi as a medic before settling down in Brighton as a GP. He loves his job but can honestly say that his happiest doctoring has been as an expedition medic. Work and family commitments mean that he hasn’t done as many trips as he would like, but he’s been lucky enough to work on trips and projects in Peru, Brasil, Costa Rica, Namibia and Norway.

Denny Levett Medic

Denny trained in Cambridge and Oxford before moving to London to pursue a career as an intensive care physician. Denny took a career break for a year to indulge in a passion for diving, working as the expedition doctor on two marine biology expeditions in Tanzania and The Hallaniyat Islands. Denny combines work and play as Deputy Director of the Centre for Aviation, Space and Extreme Environment Medicine at University College London. An honorary lecturer in diving physiology at UCL and clinical lead of diving and hyperbaric medicine research division, Denny is currently involved in developing an MSc in extreme environment physiology at UCL. She is also a key lecturer at the Expedition Medicine for medical professional course in the Lake District.
 

Elizabeth Roche Medic

Elizabeth is an extremely active doctor with the love of outdoor life, keen for new challenges and adventure. Elizabeth has worked in Orthopaedics and Vascular Surgery, General Medicine and A&E. Elizabeth’s achievements are: British University, British Junior Alpine Ski Champion; completing a multi mountain marathon, road half marathon and fell races; and 1st mixed team in the ‘C’ class of the Lowe Alpine Mountain Marathon 2003. Elizabeth was also Captain of the University Ski Team, helping organise the largest club in the union, including 2 holidays a year to the French Alps

Emma Alcock Medic

Emma’s experience of expedition medicine began back in 1994, on a Raleigh International trip to Alaska. Since then she has welcomed any excuse for travel, and has been on numerous Across the Divide challenges to Patagonia, Nicaragua, Brazil, Nepal, China, Sweden, Norway, Peru and Morocco. The rest of the time Emma is a cardiothoracic anaesthetist in a London teaching hospital.

Fiona Elliott Medic

Fiona enjoyed adventuring from an early age, much to her parent’s dismay when they discovered her on the roof of their house at the age of 18 months! Fiona’s other passion is medicine which she studied in Sheffield and included 3 months working in a small hospital in the Cook Islands. In between working in hospitals in Yorkshire, Wales and Jersey she has spent 3 years in the Territorial Army and taken part in expeditions to Guyana, Patagonia, Peru and Morocco. She also took a 6 month career break and travelled extensively around the world with her husband, Jonny. Fiona is now a GP with an interest in expedition medicine and enjoys combining her love of travelling and medicine by working for Across the Divide. She lives currently lives in Cornwall with her husband and their daughter.

Greg Edwards Medic

Greg was born in Bedford and grew up in Herefordshire in the countryside. He went on to attend Birmingham University where he attained a Medical degree. Since university, Greg has spent a year working and travelling in Australia. He has also been lucky enough to travel to many other countries in his time, and has a strong passion for experiencing other cultures

Jackie Lee Medic

A Mancunian born and bred, with original roots from the Far East, Jackie graduated from Newcastle Medical School in 1996. She has worked in the Northeast, London, Sydney and is now based in the Manchester area, where she is a GP. She has experience in various specialities and has recently completed a Diploma in Primary Health Care at Leeds University. She has travelled extensively and has a passion for the outdoors, which led her to participating in the Expedition Medicine course and thus becoming a medic for ATD. Trips have included the Great Wall of China and Peru, in addition to UK charity events. Jackie’s interests include mountain biking, running, snowboarding, tennis and walking plus too many others to list.

James Gaynor Medic

James was born in London but brought up in the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales. He enjoys a bit of a variety and adventure having spent his gap year in Himachal Pradesh, London and Southern Africa. He studied medicine in Southampton, graduating in 2005, and spent his elective in New Zealand. A fortuitous pause in his medical training in 2007 saw him sailing across the Atlantic, sailing a tall ship to France with the jubilees sailing trust and working with Raleigh International in Costa Rica and Nicaragua. He is currently training as an anaesthetist in the Wessex region and hoping to try and wangle further breaks to satisfy itchy feet on future trips with Across the Divide.

James Trotman Medic

James has been a massive fan of the outdoors since his dad took him on a camping trip aged nine. Since then he has tried to get out into the wilderness at any opportunity. After gaining a degree in Archaeology he decided that he was more of a treasure hunter and pursued a career in the travel industry for a couple of years where he travelled tirelessly. A career change beckoned however and James joined the London Ambulance Service in 2002 where he has been a State Registered Paramedic ever since. He also holds the Offshore Medic qualification and has a particular interest in remote and wilderness medicine and has recently returned from a gruelling 350 mile race to the magnetic North Pole. In his spare time, he enjoys a glass of wine or two and is an avid (if very amateur) kite surfer.

Janice Barrett Medic

Janice qualified as a nurse in 1998 and has worked on expeditions as both a medic and a guide for over 20 years visiting most continents and numerous countries in the process. She has a wide range of experience in intensive care, resuscitation, aeromedical transfers and teaches critical care. She is also on the Faculty for Expedition Medicine where she imparts wisdom and practical knowledge to like-minded individuals. She is a qualified Summer ML and is a keen sea kayaker and scuba diver.

Joe Davis Medic

Joe ’Barry Manilow’ (long story) Davis was born in the home counties - hence the accent! But as luck would have it, his Dad got a job in the Lake District when Joe was 5 and his interest in the outdoors began. It was a slow start with many a tantrum (how things....don’t change!) ’ticking off’ the Wainwright peaks, but soon he found himself most evenings on the crags of Borrowdale or canoeing through the mist on Derwent water after an overnight island bivi - Schooling Lakeland style! Joe is now a GP, interested in pre-hospital / Emergency and Mountain medicine. He is currently studying the Diploma in mountain Medicine, has taught on the Expedition Medicine courses, and worked with the Lakes air ambulance. Currently based in Manchester - ’jewel of the north’, he soon hopes to move to a more rural location, buy a range-rover, a jacket with elbow patches and wear socks with sandles!! Why else would I have worked so hard to be a GP? Since joining ATD Joe has been medic for several overseas trips, including China, Morocco, Peru, Norway, Iceland and Everest soon. He also enjoys UK ATD events, from Group Challenge weekends, to unique events like the London night hike, and the epic Maggies Ridgeway survival exercise!! Most important personnal expedition thing: alco-gel.....OCD!! When not working, he enjoys tennis, golf, cycling, climbing and adventure travel, real ale, and has recently become a ’wannabe wine snob’. Joe is looking forward to even more great adventures.

John Richmond Medic

John is a Yorkshireman who has lived in Scotland since the early 70‘s.  He is now based just south of Edinburgh near Kelso, with Vee his wife and Nell his dog.  He took early retirement from a nursing career to start Retreat Travel, providing meditation retreat and adventure holidays to the Himalayas and Costa Rica, and Singing Bowls Etc importing lovely things from Nepal to sell in the UK.

After a trip with ATD as a participant he got a job with the company as a guide/medic and has done several trips abroad (Nepal, Costa Rica, Ladakh, Peru) and lots in the UK including London to Paris and the 3 Peaks challenge.  He climbs a bit, cycles some and runs a bit (training for Ultras now thanks to Steve from ATD!) and is a probationer with the Borders Search and Rescue Unit.

Jonathan Ball Medic

Jonathan was born and has lived in London for the vast majority of his life. He entered Medical School in 1987, gained a B.Sc. in 1990 and gained his basic qualifications in 1993. As part of his undergraduate training spent 3 months in Baragwanath Hospital, Soweto. After travels and travails both long and short, Jonathan now lives and works in south London practising the art of expensive care (intensive care). He has flown in plastic chairs strapped to kites, walked up the odd hill or two, got cold in a couple of deserts, bitten (by dogs) in the Arctic, nearly drowned in a kayak (both in rivers and seas) and communed with sea creatures of all kinds whilst wearing fetish gear. Across the Divide have been kind enough to employ him on few expeditions in at least of three of the four global corners.

Julia Martin Medic

Julia has worked as a trip doctor for the past 4 years and has participated in 16 events, some treks but mainly cycling in Vietnam, China, Egypt, Thailand, Mexico, South America, Kenya, Iceland, Jordan and Morocco. Julia also had 5 weeks in Zulu Hospital in South Africa and was one of the 10 medics who went out independently to provide medical help to Sri Lanka following the Boxing Day Tsunami disaster in 2004. Julia enjoys the diversity of her work and the flexibility that this allows enabling her to take part in many other areas of outside work which include travelling, photography and outdoor sports – cycling, walking, windsurfing and kayaking. Julia’s next personal challenge is to cycle from John O’Groats to Lands End with several friends

Karen Bisset Medic

Originally from Edinburgh, Karen moved to Newcastle at the age of 17 to attend Medical School. After various training jobs in the UK and Australia, Karen has now settled into General Practice. Karen spent 3 months as an Expedition Medic for a Coral Cay conservation environmental project at the beginning of 2002 before settling into her permanent job. Karen has a love of travel which has taken her to many interesting places; she also loves SCUBA diving and has completed her Divemaster training.

Kate Cheeseman Medic

Kate was born and bred in Central London, always trying to leave but somehow always returning! As a child Kate wanted to become an astronaut and thought becoming a doctor would be the easiest way into NASA - no luck so far! Kate has always loved travel and took a year out of Medical School and spent 5 months teaching English and Science on farm schools in South America, 3 months travelling Australia and a month in Thailand. Since graduating from Medical School, Kate has spent a year in Perth, Western Australia enjoying the sun, sea, surf, sand and Sauvignon Blanc. Missing the snow, Kate moved to Christchurch, New Zealand for a year. After returning to the UK she has spent the last 30 months in Anaesthetics and Intensive Care.

Katy Lamb Medic

Katy completed her GP training in Northumberland in 2000 and now works part time as a GP in Alnwick. Her practice also covers the local cottage hospital, minor injury unit and RAF base. She started working for Across the Divide in 2001 with a trip to Peru on her return from A&E work in New Zealand, and a Raleigh International expedition in Belize. She has completed trips all over the world from north of the Arctic Circle to the southern tip of Patagonia and is always looking forward to the next adventure. Day to day adventures include looking after three young children, competing in triathlons and open water swimming in the North Sea

Kirstie Nicol Medic

Kirstie was born and bred in rural Scotland where her passion for the outdoors began. Kirstie studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh and her elective worked with tribal people in Borneo and also spent time working at a hospital in New Zealand. After graduating she worked in different hospitals in Scotland for two years before travelling extensively around the world and then returning to New Zealand for three years in hospital training. During her time there Kirstie spent her spare time trekking, kayaking, mountain biking, skiing, and she also competed in a triathlon and ran a half marathon.

Lucy Dickinson Medic

Lucy was born in Cumbria and enjoyed easy access to the Lake District as she grew up. She went on to gain her medical degree in Aberdeen where she cultivated her love of snow sports. In 1999 she moved to New Zealand where she lived and worked for four years, again taking advantage of the fantastic outdoor lifestyle on offer. She now works as a GP back in the Lake District and enjoys snowboarding, mountain-biking, kite-surfing and surfing amongst many other outdoor pusuits. In between medical posts Lucy has travelled extensively including to the South Pacific, Australasia, SE Asia, South America, Africa and Japan. She worked in a hospital in Tonga on her elective in 1997, and went with Raleigh International to Chile in 2003. She hopes to continue combining her interest in travel with her medical career by way of further expeditions and plans to go to the antarctic later this year.

Mark Howseman Medic

Mark was born in Newcastle upon Tyne, went to school in Hexham until he was 13 and then moved to Lancashire. After qualifying as a doctor in 1990 Mark worked for 2 years in hospitals before taking the first of 2 gap years. During this time he spent 5 months travelling around the world and 4 months at the Goethe Institute in Bavaria learning German. Mark then spent 2 years completing his GP Vocational Training in the North East of England before working for 6 months in Gibraltar and 3 years as a Civilian Medical Practitioner (CMP) for the British Army in Germany. He currently works in Edinburgh as a sessional GP and a Forensic Medical Examiner.

Mary Mackintosh Medic

Mary was born and brought up in the far north west of Scotland where she developed her love of the outdoors. After school she took a year out to teach English in Nepal and travel in India before returning to study medicine in Glasgow. During her holidays she travelled extensively in South East Asia, Europe and India. After graduating in 2002 she worked for 5 years in hospital medicine in Scotland and New Zealand before deciding to train as a GP. She now works as a locum GP in Edinburgh and the Highlands of Scotland as well as having the fantastic job of being an expedition medic with ATD.

Mo Osman Medic

Mo was born in Uganda and spent his early years between Uganda and Kenya. At the age of six he moved to England with his family because of the deteriorating political situation in Uganda, and has since lived in Shropshire. He attained his Registration in general nursing at Wolverhampton and spent a further eighteen months after qualifying working in Wolverhampton. Mo has a keen interest in the outdoors and regards adapting his skills to different situations as a welcome challenge. Mo’s present position in Angola offers him the ideal opportunity to pursue his professional and varied recreational interests

Neil Dignon Medic

Born in London but reincarnated as a Celt (much like Shane MacGowan in many, many respects). Graduated in Medicine in 1994, and recently appointed as Consultant in Emergency Medicine at Glasgow Royal Infirmary. Digger was one of our first Expedition Medics and his experience and humour formed a large part of medical teams foundation and continuing high levels of backup. Digger is also a senior lecturer on the Expedition Medicine course.

Nicki Petrie Medic

Nicki was born in Bangkok, Thailand as her parents were working there at that time and after a brief stay of 18 months returned to the UK – well Bolton. Her parents got itchy feet and by the age of 4 she was off again, this time to Italy where Nicki went through primary school and lived very near to the home of Ferrari – which was where Nicki developed her love of all things FAST!

Richard Kaye Medic

Originally from London suburbia, Rich saw the light and escaped as soon as he could. After studying in Scotland and Manchester, he moved around for several years, finally returning from South America and New Zealand to settle into the South-West surfing and outdoor scene. After training in Accident and Emergency and Paediatrics, he took the Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, but eventually lost hope of finding a case of Ebola in Devon. He has spent the last two years training in anaesthesia and intensive care instead, continuing his travels at far too frequent intervals.
 

Richard Knight Medic

Steve was brought up in Stafford and did his medical training in Nottingham. He has worked around the country mainly in Acute Medicine and A&E and has just completed his GP training. Steve has worked briefly in Thailand and New Orleans. Steve enjoys outdoor activities, walking, trekking and has recently taken up cycling and is currently learning basic Spanish

Richard is an Emergency Doctor based in Edinburgh. He is qualified in Advanced Life Support (ALS), Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), European Paediatric Life Support, (EPLS) and is a British Association of Immediate Care, (BASICS) doctor. He is also a certified Major Incident (MIMMS) Practitioner and a volunteer fireman. His outdoor interests have taken him on walking, climbing and mountain bike expeditions across the globe. He has cycled across the Himalayas, ascending past Camp II on Mount Everest and has been lead doctor on expeditions to Europe, Canada, Costa Rica, China and Borneo. Richard works regularly with the Scottish Ambulance Service and Emergency Helicopter Retrieval Service He is a Captain in the Royal Army Medical Corps and has extensive training in disaster, including chemical, biological and nuclear, management. He has been involved with sports and event medicine for several years, providing medical cover to endurance events, sports meets, rock concerts and musical festivals. Richard was a doctor for the National Transplant Games and is team medic for the Edinburgh Capitals Ice Hockey team.
 

Rob Partington Medic

Born in Sheffield, Rob has been interested in sports and the outdoors since childhood. He studied Geology at Manchester University, and then went on to work in Australia (WA/QLD) as a Mining Geologist. He also had a brief spell working in the Offshore Oil Industry which was based in Aberdeen prior to starting Medical School. In 1994 Rob qualified as a Doctor and mainly worked in A&E and Anaesthetics until 3 years ago when he started General Practice which gives him more flexibility to spend time with his daughter and family, whilst still enabling the off run or travel experience to take place

Robert Conway Medic

Ever since he was left alone in the bath as a small child Rob has had a fondness for the ocean and an ever so little tendency for separation anxiety. He has taken part in projects since the turn of the century both in Madagascar and the Indian Ocean, and has done so as a research diver and medic as well as leading a number of expeditions that have culminated in awards from Buckingham Palace. Rob is currently a doctor at Mayday University Hospital and is Chairman of the Trustees of Blue Ventures Conservation. He has been involved and was an intern for Divers Alert Network, the largest diving medical and safety group in the world. He has an interest in expeditions and is actively involved in the Wilderness Medical Society here in the UK.
 

Robin Ghosh Medic

Robin was born in Portsmouth on the south coast. After a gap year in Canada, Robin gained a Medical Degree from Birmingham University, where he stayed working for a year before heading off to New Zealand for Obstetrics and Gynaecology experience and for some of the outdoor life. Since returning to the UK Robin has completed GP Training in Worcester and now is a Locum in the Hampshire area. Robin has always been sports orientated, playing hockey and rugby for various teams, although Robin would prefer to head for the hills rather than the playing fields. Robin is also a keen mountain biker and runs half marathons which has led him into being interested in sports medicine and more recently altitude/expedition medicine. Robin combines work as a locum with regular adventures abroad.

Roger Alcock Medic

Roger was born in Fife, Scotland and, after electives in Ecuador and Germany, qualified from Edinburgh in 1997. Currently living in Winnie the Pooh country in East Sussex, he is completing Emergency Medicine training. He holds ACLS and instructs on Advanced Trauma and Paediatric Life support courses. Since his first foreign cycle tour in France aged 8 Roger has been exploring, enjoying independent cycle tours throughout Europe, Africa, Japan, the Carribean, Central and South America. In 2003 he took time out studying Spanish in Guatemala, before cycling ‘la Ruta Maya’ through Honduras, Guatemala and Belize. Subsequently he worked in Sweden and New Zealand, gaining new interests in sea kayaking and climbing in addition to his love of hiking, windsurfing and cycling. He was chief medic with a Raleigh International expedition to Namibia and currently works as a medic with ATD expeditions and has been to Cuba and Peru.

Ruth Arkle Medic

Ruth grew up in Plymouth then studied medicine at Leeds University. She has trained as a General Practitioner and in Emergency Medicine. She recently worked in Tasmania, Australia for two years and is currently based in Devon. She loves outdoor activities, especially hiking, scuba diving and mountain biking. She enjoyed her experiences as a medic for ultra-marathon events but privately runs much shorter distances....

Sarah Bailey Medic

Sarah was born in Scotland to a Geordie and manccunian and spent her formative years in Teeside before heading back to Edinburgh to Medical School. Sarah now works as a GP in Cumbria. She has an interest in pre hospital care and tropical medicine, having thoroughly enjoyed the diploma in the latter at Liverpool. Sarah has been involved with expedition medicine for many years and has travelled with them to Peru, Sabah, Nepal and Costa Rica. Sarah’s love of climbing takes her on other trips and whilst closer to home she also enjoys fellrunning and cycling.

Sean Hudson Medic

Dr. Sean Hudson has been involved in a wide array of expeditions over the last 20 years. During this time he has trekked across the Darien Gap, The Thar Desert, dogsledded across Scandinavia, worked as a trekking guide and Chief Medic for Raleigh International in Namibia and Zimbabwe, a trauma medic in Columbia, ski field doctor in New Zealand, a HEMS doctor in the UK, spent a season in Antarctica, acted as an medical consultant for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and provided medical cover for the Pirelli Calendar. In 2002, he and his wife, expedition medic Dr. Caroline Knox, helped ATD directors Mark and Karen Hannaford establish Expedition and Wilderness Medicine, which seeks to provide comprehensive training for medical professionals working as expedition medical officers in a variety extreme and remote environments, provide event support and media medical services

Sian Firth Medic

A Yorkshire girl, Sian moved to Newcastle for university and qualified at Newcastle University in 1996. Since then she has worked in various specialities both in the UK and Australia. Most recently Sian has qualified as a GP and works full time in a practice in Sunderland. She has a keen interest in Sports Medicine and is currently completing a diploma in Sports Medicine. Working for ATD for six years, Sian has been on many expeditions - in the UK and also Nepal, Namibia, Norway, China, Peru and Thailand. Sian has travelled in Africa, S America, Asia, Australia and Europe and combines this with love of outdoor pursuits, such as mountain biking, trekking, diving and skiing to name but a few.

Simon Dalton Medic

Simon was born in Tavistock, Devon, but he didn’t hang around for long. At the age of 3 he was off to the rather warmer climes of Fiji, where he spent many happy years. After flitting back and forth between England and New Zealand, he is now based in Christchurch (New Zealand) where he works as a Specialist Registrar in General and Respiratory Medicine, with interests in high altitude physiology and tuberculosis. Simon enjoys walking and hiking as well as photography, wine, surfing and rugby. He also holds a private pilot’s licence. Unfortunately he has a incurable case of itchy feet, and is constantly scheming about how to see more of the wonders of the world, whilst at the same time avoiding the horror of mass-market tourism.
