Darren O’Brien Guide

Obbie was born and raised in Ireland (according to him ‘The Centre Of The Universe’. Growing up he developed a hunger for the great outdoors, camping, playing football, GAA, horse riding, and fishing. His biggest ambition is to emulate McGuyver by promoting world peace using just a piece of chewing gum foil wrapper.

Across the Divide

Darren Roberts Guide

Darren joined ATD after successfully completing the Namibian 24-hour ultra marathon. He grew up as a nomadic Army child, following his father around the world and eventually serving in infantry reconnaissance himself. He has travelled extensively in the Middle East and Europe, including 3 years growing bananas on a kibbutz bordering Lebanon. He’s a qualified Rescue Diver and is currently training to become a Mountain Leader. He also represents Berghaus and Men’s Fitness magazine as part of their 3-man ultra running team. His favourite places are the Lake District and Chamonix and he aims to one day lead expeditions with ATD to far flung places. He doesn’t think there’s much you can’t do in this life (just like his heroes T.E. Lawrence and Ranulph Fiennes) and loves helping people achieve new goals and exceeding their limits. He hopes to be able to run forever, and one day, climb Everest and reach the South and North Pole.

Across the Divide

Dean Harris Guide

Dean made his maiden appearance in the 3rd Just Walk in 2009. A very competitive and adventurous type, he likes to win and is very determined to finish any challenge put his way.He found out about ATD by taking part in The Princes’ Trust Coast to Coast trip across Costa Rica in 2008 and when he returned decided it was something he would like to do more often. During the trip he found that he enjoyed helping other people overcome their challenges and fears, as well as his own, so wants to pursue this through ATD.Now a manager for a software company in Berkshire, Dean was a short time member of the ATC (the youth RAF) as a teenager which involved taking part in many camping and orienteering adventures. He was also sponsored by the Rotary Club to attend and succeed in achieving a Youth Leadership Award. He plays many sports at an amateur and competitive level and hopes to continue to be a valued team member on future ATD events.

Across the Divide

Ian Lindner Guide

Brought up in South Africa Ian has always loved the outdoors, spending many weekends venturing out into the national parks, camping with the Big 5!! He has been in the Uk for 3 years now, working in he Pharmaceutical industry in Manchester, and has recently discovered the delights of the Lake District / Peak District and even Scottish skiing - mud and ice sliding while avoiding fences! He loves getting away from the rat race - high into the hills, for wild camps and mountain biking. Ian has also just embarked on learning the Violin (poor neighbours); enjoys real ale, fine wines, tennis, rollercoasters, and is a wannabe ’Nigella’ in the kitchen - someone to have on treks! With a background in Medical Science, he is looking to expand his knowledge into a more Expedition Medical role, at ATD training events, and along wth further mountain skills, is looking forward to getting more involved in UK events, aiming to be a guiding medic on some overseas expeditions in the future.

Across the Divide

Jeff Dyer Guide

Originally hailing from the West Country, Jeff grew up in rural East Anglia and learned to appreciate the outdoor life from an early age. Too tight to check into a hotel, his father regularly took him and his brothers on basic back-to-nature camping trips on Dartmoor and Exmoor to toughen them up. Despite their best efforts to give Jeff the slip, he managed to hone his navigational skills sufficiently to always return home to the fold. Among his many exploits Jeff, aided by one of his brothers rowed the channel following his mother’s untimely death from cancer, to raise much-needed funds for a CAT Scanner in their local hospital.

Across the Divide

Jim Cochrane Guide

Jim began travelling with a visit to Ethiopia at the age of sixteen. At university the lure of adventure led to climbing, mountaineering and in particular caving; culminating in six exploratory expeditions to the Austrian Alps from 2001-6. Since graduating in geography in 2001 Jim has also worked as an outdoor-shop manager and freelance instructor (he tries to forget his first job in insurance). Joining Across the Divide on his first UK event in 2005, Jim has since worked on 30 UK events as well as guiding on ATD's foreign treks and multi-activity challenges. in 2007 he was named ‘Mr UK’ at the ATD oscars! His outdoor interests have diversified over the years and include mountain biking and boarding (though it hurts a lot), snowboarding and the occasional mountain marathon. A jack of all trades… Jim is currently completing an MSc in Environmental Geology on a Geotechnical Engineering placement. It seemed a more realistic career choice than, say, full time National Geographic photographer or a blues guitarist, both of which might just bump ATD down to third best job in the world were they to happen.

Across the Divide

Jonathan was born in Jersey where he grew up until old enough to run away and join the Army. After 11 years he left and came back to the Island to work, but mainly play, and can often be found fishing for his supper in his kayak.
