Across the Divide Corporate Events and Charity Challenges

Mark Hannaford Managing and Marketing Director

Mark has been involved in the world of expeditions and adventure travel in one way or another for over 24 years and has worked professionally on all of the world ‘s continents enjoying (and at times suffering) all climatic extremes. These experiences led to a profound love of the outdoors, a passion for communicating that to others and a desire to enable others’ enjoyment of it.Following a degree in Geography, time spent working on Operation Raleigh and time served with the Special Forces Reserve, Mark co-founded Across the Divide with Karen Hannaford, with the aim of providing innovative experiences that are challenging and safe. The challenges are also delivered with a keen dose of humour, which is always a great motivator! Mark’s experience, both on expeditions and in business, mean that ATD has the capability to develop bespoke programmes for employee development, as well as customer development events – which will stretch and cement capabilities and relationships.

Creating Across the Divide’s Corporate Social Responsibility arm in 2007 earned Mark the prestige of being awarded BT’s Essence of the Entrepreneur Award in 2008. He was also made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts to join his election as a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society in the early 1990s. Mark’s keen eye for the eclectic and unusual has also allowed him to become a widely published travel photographer in publications such as The Sunday Times, The Sunday Telegraph, Daily Mail, Conde Nast and National Geographic and he is represented by the prestigious John Warburton Lee photographic agency as well as Alamy and Corbis.

Karen Hannaford Managing Director

A founding Director of the company, Karen has over 17 years experience of organising expeditions, large scale event management and charity event work.Karen obtained a BSc in agriculture at Wye College in Kent, now part of Imperial College, London. However, her career took on a less agricultural theme as she headed off into the event and charity world, becoming the Special Event Manager for ICAN, one of Britain’s oldest charities which helps children across the UK with speech and learning difficulties. In 1996 Karen tired of London life, and her passion for running expeditions both large and small around the world led her to co-found Across the Divide Expeditions in Somerset with Mark Hannaford. By leading the majority of the expeditions in the first few years of the business, she managed to continue to enjoy her love of travelling.

Karen was one of the first people to volunteer and become a First Responders in the UK, a local unit that operate in remote areas, responding to 999 medical calls and dealing with emergencies until paramedics arrive. Karen is also a founding director and instructor on the Expedition Medicine Courses.

Karen’s ability to juggle family and work commitments naturally led to her heading up the Operational side of the business whilst also bringing up their children.  Karen’s keen operational skills have been key to the company’s current success.

James Trotman Medic

James has been a massive fan of the outdoors since his dad took him on a camping trip aged nine. Since then he has tried to get out into the wilderness at any opportunity. After gaining a degree in Archaeology he decided that he was more of a treasure hunter and pursued a career in the travel industry for a couple of years where he travelled tirelessly. A career change beckoned however and James joined the London Ambulance Service in 2002 where he has been a State Registered Paramedic ever since. He also holds the Offshore Medic qualification and has a particular interest in remote and wilderness medicine and has recently returned from a gruelling 350 mile race to the magnetic North Pole. Jeff Dyer Guide

Originally hailing from the West Country, Jeff grew up in rural East Anglia and learned to appreciate the outdoor life from an early age. Too tight to check into a hotel, his father regularly took him and his brothers on basic back-to-nature camping trips on Dartmoor and Exmoor to toughen them up. Despite their best efforts to give Jeff the slip, he managed to hone his navigational skills sufficiently to always return home to the fold. Among his many exploits Jeff, aided by one of his brothers rowed the channel following his mother’s untimely death from cancer, to raise much-needed funds for a CAT Scanner in their local hospital.

Jim Cochrane Guide

Jim began travelling with a visit to Ethiopia at the age of sixteen. At university the lure of adventure led to climbing, mountaineering and in particular caving; culminating in six exploratory expeditions to the Austrian Alps from 2001-6. Since graduating in geography in 2001 Jim has also worked as an outdoor-shop manager and freelance instructor (he tries to forget his first job in insurance). Joining Across the Divide on his first UK event in 2005, Jim has since worked on 30 UK events as well as guiding on ATD's foreign treks and multi-activity challenges. in 2007 he was named ‘Mr UK’ at the ATD oscars! His outdoor interests have diversified over the years and include mountain biking and boarding (though it hurts a lot), snowboarding and the occasional mountain marathon. A jack of all trades… Jim is currently completing an MSc in Environmental Geology on a Geotechnical Engineering placement. It seemed a more realistic career choice than, say, full time National Geographic photographer or a blues guitarist, both of which might just bump ATD down to third best job in the world were they to happen.

Joe Davis Medic

Joe ’Barry Manilow’ (long story) Davis was born in the home counties - hence the accent! But as luck would have it, his Dad got a job in the Lake District when Joe was 5 and his interest in the outdoors began. It was a slow start with many a tantrum (how things....don’t change!) ’ticking off’ the Wainwright peaks, but soon he found himself most evenings on the crags of Borrowdale or canoeing through the mist on Derwent water after an overnight island bivi - Schooling Lakeland style! Joe is now a GP, interested in pre-hospital / Emergency and Mountain medicine. He is currently studying the Diploma in mountain Medicine, has taught on the Expedition Medicine courses, and worked with the Lakes air ambulance. Currently based in Manchester - ’jewel of the north’, he soon hopes to move to a more rural location, buy a range-rover, a jacket with elbow patches and wear socks with sandles!! Why else would I have worked so hard to be a GP? Since joining ATD Joe has been medic for several overseas trips, including China, Morocco, Peru, Norway, Iceland and Everest soon. He also enjoys UK ATD events, from Group Challenge weekends, to unique events like the London night hike, and the epic Maggies Ridgeway survival exercise!! Most important personnal expedition thing: alco-gel.....OCD!! When not working, he enjoys tennis, golf, cycling, climbing and adventure travel, real ale, and has recently become a ’wannabe wine snob’. Joe is looking forward to even more great adventures.
