Borneo Rainforest Trek and Orangutan Project - Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Borneo
05 June 2010 to 18 June 2010
Our jungle challenge takes you from sea level to the highest point in South East Asia – Mount Kinabalu, at 4,101m. Trekking through an area that has some of the richest flora in the world, the route takes us along river valleys, through lowland rainforest, villages, paddy fields, pineapple and rubber plantations, until we finally reach the trail towards the summit of Mount Kinabalu.
More Information
You will need to book this trip directly with the ISPCA. Mount Kinabalu is the subject of wonderful myths and legends: historically the mountain has been a sacred spot, and the challenge to conquer the summit is inspiring. Kinabalu Park is famous largely for the climb to the peak, but the beautiful route along the way certainly competes with the amazing view from the summit.
Following our successful summit we travel to the Kabili-Sepilok forest reserve. This reserve is used by students and scientists from all over the world and is also used by the Wildlife Department for their Orang-utan Rehabilitation project. We finish our challenge by assisting with some practical projects, making a real difference to the conservation efforts in the area and having the opportunity to have a behind the scenes guided tour of the Orang-utan sanctuary.
Borneo has a diverse population consisting of 32 ethnic communities, and boasts some of the world's greatest wildlife treasures. Sabah is part of the island of Borneo known as "The Land Below the Wind" because geographically it is situated below the typhoon and monsoon belt. In Sabah you find the highest mountain in South East Asia, Mount Kinabalu, located in the Kinabalu National Park. The park is Malaysia's first World Heritage Site, full of jungles, rivers and wildlife.
Our charity challenges and charity treks in such a fascinating area of Borneo are demanding, rewarding and an achievement you will never forget.
