Climb Mount Kilimanjaro 2011. Kilimanjaro

15 September 2011 to 26 September 2011

Join Across the Divide on the Roof of Africa!

At 5,895 metres, Kilimanjaro's snow-capped peak is one of the most magnificent sights in Africa. Our trek takes you to the remote north-eastern side of Kilimanjaro and follows the Rongai Route to the summit.

Rongai retains a true sense of wilderness: there are few fewer trekkers than on other trails (usually one-tenth of the number that take the Marangu Route) and it is generally considered to offer some of the best opportunities for acclimatisation.

If you are interested in taking part in this trek please call us on 01460 30456.

Itinerary

Day 1- UK to Kilimanjaro Airport. Transfer to Moshi for overnight in a hotel.

Day 2 - Full expedition briefing and then time to relax or explore the local area. Overnight in hotel.

Day 3 - Transfer to Naru Moru village (1980m) where the trekking starts. First night's camping on the mountain.

Day 4 - Today we ascend to the Second Cave where there are impressive views of Kibo and the eastern ice fields on the rim of the crater. In the afternoon we take an acclimatisation walk, but camp back at the Second Cave.

Day 5 - Ascending the mountain we enter the Alpine Desert. We camp at Kikelewa at 3,900m.

Day 6 - Today we continue our ascent of the mountain and trek up to Mawenzi Tarn.

Day 7 - This morning we take a short acclimatisation walk across the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. We return to our camp and rest in the afternoon, to prepare us for the long couple of days ahead, and our summit attempt.

Day 8 - Today we will have an early start and make our way up to Kibo Hut. After an early meal and briefing, we catch some sleep before our midnight departure for the summit climb.

Day 9 - We leave at around midnight for our long, steady trek up to Gilman's Point. We hope to reach Gilman's Point at dawn, for an incredible sunrise over the African plains. From here it is a 2 hour walk to the highest point in Africa, the summit of Kilimanjaro at 5,895m.

After reaching the summit we descend to our overnight camp at Horombo. This is a long and tiring day, involving up to 20 hours of walking, but well worth it for the feeling of achievement and stunning views.

Day 10 - We descend through the rainforest on the south-eastern side of the mountain.  At Marangu Gate we pick up our transport back to Arusha, and celebrate our achievements at the hotel.

Day 11  - Time permitting we have some free time in Arusha, before transferring to the airport for our flight home.

Day 12 - Arrive back in the UK.
