4SIGHT

4SIGHT was established in 1921 to support blind and partially sighted people and is based in West Sussex.  There are an estimated 20,000 people with low vision or sight loss in the County.  As well as our hospital and resource centre services, we now support over 2,000 members and also provide people with a wide range of practical support solutions to help them remain independent following sight loss.

We do this, thanks to the help of over 500 volunteers.  Everything we do is to ensure that visually impaired people are able to access information, advice, equipment, skills and services needed to continue to live independently, to build confidence and to participate actively in their community and family lives.

ACE - Animal Care in Egypt

ACE is a fully functioning Veterinary Hospital based in Luxor, we provide free veterinary care and treatment to all kinds of neglected and abused animals, we are also committed to prevention through education of animal care and maintenance.  ACE has already seen the difference this can make.  We have an official education programme with up to 300 children a week visiting us from local schools to learn that animals feel pain and should be treated with respect as they serve their human masters.

ACE has been established for 10 years and is growing fast due to the desperate need for our services.  Over 5,000 animals can come through our gates every month, most require medical attention from our qualified Egyptian and International vets.  Many are just brought to use the washing facilities before another long day’s work in the hot sun.  ACE support some of the poorest families of Egypt by providing them with free veterinary and maintenance services for their working animals, often their only means of providing for their family.

ACE is a small charity making a big difference in Egypt, doing all that we can to ensure better animal welfare standards in the future for all animals of Egypt.

Anthony Nolan Trust, The

Essentially the Anthony Nolan exists to take back as many lives as possible from Leukaemia. Every twenty-one minutes someone in the UK is diagnosed with Leukaemia and may need a bone marrow transplant to save their life. Our job is to find that donor and save that life. How do we do this? In one sense, all we do is connect people. We connect one person, whose immune system needs a boost – with another person, who is prepared to share a little of theirs. Matching patients with donors. The Anthony Nolan holds the UK’s most successful register of potential donors and every day we are recruiting more and more people to the list.

Arthritis Care

Arthritis is a widespread, disabling condition, the most common long term medical condition that limits people’s daily activities.  One in five adults are affected by arthritis, the biggest cause of physical disability in the UK. Arthritis impacts on day to day living and can make the most simple of tasks difficult - cooking, getting a good night’s sleep, even sipping a cup of water.

Arthritis Care exists to support people with all forms of arthritis. We are the UK’s largest charity working with and for all people who have arthritis.  We are a user led charity which means people with arthritis are at the heart of our work. We offer people with arthritis the information and support they need to make informed choices about managing their arthritis, to reach their potential in society and to fully participate in their communities.

Dame Vera Lynn Trust

The Dame Vera Lynn Trust, School for Parents has a unique place in the development of Conductive Education in this country and currently supports around 60 families. School for Parents  works in partnership with parents to educate pre-school children with motor learning difficulties.

For a family to be suddenly and unexpectedly faced with the news that their child is affected by cerebral palsy is a life-altering experience. The special attention that their child will need in his or her early years is vital and early intervention is crucial. A highly skilled and professional team helps parents to recognise their child’s unique qualities and achievements.  Every day is an exciting experience, and parents can talk openly to each other about their child’s activities, sharing an understanding of each other’s situation.  We have to raise £450,000 every year to provide this vital service and the Trust receives no statutory funding.

Dreamflight

Dreamflight is a registered UK charity that changes young lives through taking seriously ill and disabled children, without their parents, on the holiday of a lifetime to Orlando, Florida.

Once a year, 192 deserving children from all over the UK, accompanied by a team of medical carers, board a chartered Boeing 747 and head to Florida to spend 10 magical days of fun and excitement. Many children could not undertake such a trip without the support of the army of doctors, nurses, physiotherapists and non-medical volunteers who care for the children 24 hours a day.

Dreamflight is not just a holiday. The children leave their families behind giving them an opportunity to discover independence, confidence, and a whole new outlook on life. Often for the first time, these children realise that they are not alone, and they are not the odd one out. They see children around them who have also suffered, they gain perspective, and experience things they never thought possible.  Dreamflight does something that medicine can't.

Kids Company was established by Camila Batmanghelidjh in 1996. We provide practical, emotional and educational support to vulnerable inner-city children and young people. Many of the 14,000 children we support have experienced severe and multiple trauma. We support these incredibly courageous children and young people by offering a safe, caring, family environment. We deliver services in 38 inner-city schools, two street-level centres, an early intervention therapy house and an over 16s educational academy. In 2007 Kids Company was awarded the Liberty and Justice Human Rights Award. Visit our website at www.kidsco.org.uk

Kids for Kids

KIDS FOR KIDS helps children the world has forgotten, children in Darfur, Sudan, who live lives of inexcusable, and unimaginable, hardship. We are the only organisation created specially to help the children of Darfur, living out of sight of the world in the remote villages. Children who have never seen a toy, who have no books, no bed, often not even a blanket, who have little chance of education and, worst of all, who walk miles for every drop of water. Key to our help is our Goat Loan Project - we lend 6 goats to a family so that the children have milk, often for the first time in their lives. After 2 years they pass on 6 offspring to another family. Simple help that makes an enormous difference particularly now when inflation in Darfur is soaring and the price of a goat - just £22 ($40) is beyond a mother's dreams.

Not all of these receive the direct attentions of bullies, but learning can be seriously affected if children witness or participate in aggression.

Rose Road Association

The Rose Road Association works with hundreds of children and young people from across Hampshire and the south of England, all of whom have a range of complex and multiple disabilities. These young people are, in most cases, both cognitively and physically disabled. All of our children and young people face extreme challenges in relation to their day-to-day lives, but we believe they have the right to develop and flourish just as every young person.

The Association provides a variety of essential services including Rosewood School, The Oaks and The Acorns short-break centre, an outreach service, fostering services and play schemes and youth clubs. Rose Road also provides support and information and believes passionately in valuing individuals, promoting their potential, respecting their choices and always celebrating their achievements. Caring for a child with complex disabilities can be very challenging and the help and advice provided by the Association is often a lifeline for those who need our support.

Through our fundraising we have been able to do so much, providing music therapy sessions and specialist equipment through to wonderful day trips and activity days which otherwise would not have been possible. However, we want to do more to support not just our young people but also the families and carers of those who attend Rose Road, ensuring that they continue to benefit from the innovative and creative opportunities we know make a real difference to our school, outreach and respite services.

The Smile4Rich Appeal aims to improve the range and quality of patient care at the WNC by raising funds to provide new equipment and facilities that would not otherwise be available, and by sponsoring pioneering research into new treatments for a variety of neurological conditions. Previously funded projects at the Centre include a dedicated neurological intensive care ambulance which has carried over 1,700 patients since becoming operational in March 2007, and a Paediatric Video-Telemetry Suite which is used to asses children with severe epilepsy for life-changing corrective surgery.

Our current appeal aims to raise £200k to equip one of the Centre' operating theatres with a state-of-the-art neurosurgical operating microscope fitted with FL800 Fluorescence imaging technology, a system that will enable surgeons to see real-time images of blood-flow in the brain during neurovascular surgery, such as for the clipping of aneurysms.

Target Tuberculosis

We are Target Tuberculosis and our vision is a world free from TB. Here in the UK we think of TB as a disease that has been eradicated but the reality is TB is still one of the world’s biggest killer diseases, with 9 million new cases every year.  Despite being preventable and curable, 2 million people will needlessly die of TB this year alone.  Our mission is to address the health, social and economic impact of the global TB epidemic. We are based in Brighton but we work with local partners in countries across Africa and Asia to reach some of the most isolated and impoverished communities in the world.

Teenage Cancer Trust

At Teenage Cancer Trust, we understand that young people with cancer require specialist care.

We know how damaging it is to take a young person away from their everyday life, their friends, their environment, their family – and put them in a cancer ward with small children or older people.  Young people have a much better chance in their fight against cancer if they are treated by teenage cancer experts, in an environment tailored to their needs. So we’re working every day to make that happen.
