1. Parkinson's UK

Every hour, someone in the UK is told they have Parkinson's. Because we’re here, no one has to face Parkinson’s alone.

We bring people with Parkinson’s, their carers and families together via our network of local groups, our website and free confidential helpline 0808 800 0303. Specialist nurses, our supporters and staff provide information and training on every aspect of Parkinson's.

As the UK's Parkinson's support and research charity we’re leading the work to find a cure, and we're closer than ever. We also campaign to change attitudes and demand better services.

Our work is totally dependent on donations.  Help us to find a cure and improve life for everyone affected by Parkinson's.

Parkinson's UK is the operating name of the Parkinson's Disease Society of the United Kingdom. A charity registered in England and Wales (258197) and in Scotland (SC037554).

ACE - Animal Care in Egypt

ACE is a fully functioning Veterinary Hospital based in Luxor, we provide free veterinary care and treatment to all kinds of neglected and abused animals, we are also committed to prevention through education of animal care and maintenance.  ACE has already seen the difference this can make.  We have an official education programme with up to 300 children a week visiting us from local schools to learn that animals feel pain and should be treated with respect as they serve their human masters.

ACE has been established for 10 years and is growing fast due to the desperate need for our services.  Over 5,000 animals can come through our gates every month, most require medical attention from our qualified Egyptian and International vets.  Many are just brought to use the washing facilities before another long day’s work in the hot sun.  ACE support some of the poorest families of Egypt by providing them with free veterinary and maintenance services for their working animals, often their only means of providing for their family.

ACE is a small charity making a big difference in Egypt, doing all that we can to ensure better animal welfare standards in the future for all animals of Egypt.

African Initiatives

African Initiatives is a small but effective social justice organisation that supports the rights of people to take part in the social, economic, political and environmental decision-making that affects them at a community, national and international level. Our vision is of an equal world in which everyone has their voice heard and is empowered to claim their rights. African Initiatives concentrates its work on girls’ education, women’s rights, health education, sustainable livelihoods, land rights and supporting youth at risk. We work in long-term partnerships, strengthening the capacity of a number of grassroots organisations in Tanzania and Ghana. These partnerships are supported through the provision of funds, information, resources, training, advice, mentoring for staff, monitoring and evaluation, as well as impact assessments. We also work with our partners to support communities themselves in finding their own long term solutions to the problems that they face as well as empowering them to make their voices heard, stand up against corruption and lift themselves out of poverty.

To support our work in Africa, African Initiatives also implements a Global Education Programme here in the UK dedicated to raising awareness of development issues and promoting positive images of the developing world. Working with schools, universities, local authorities, community groups and the African Diaspora we seek to put global education firmly on the agenda and change people's understanding about the issues and causes of poverty and injustice.

Anthony Nolan Trust, The

Essentially the Anthony Nolan exists to take back as many lives as possible from Leukaemia. Every twenty-one minutes someone in the UK is diagnosed with Leukaemia and may need a bone marrow transplant to save their life. Our job is to find that donor and save that life. How do we do this? In one sense, all we do is connect people. We connect one person, whose immune system needs a boost – with another person, who is prepared to share a little of theirs. Matching patients with donors. The Anthony Nolan holds the UK’s most successful register of potential donors and every day we are recruiting more and more people to the list.

Bread and Water for Africa UK

Bread and Water for Africa UK was founded to support and strengthen grassroots organisations across Africa. Over the years, we have identified 11 community programmes in Kenya, Ethiopia, Burundi, Zambia, Sierra Leone, Uganda, Mozambique and Zimbabwe, founded by driven and innovative leaders that address key problems within their respective communities.

Together with these partners, we are working to build real, lasting solutions to local problems and to give communities the tools and resources they need to help themselves. We know that the people of Africa are ready and willing to take hold of their own futures and make their tomorrows better than their todays, but that they often lack the resources they need to take action. Bread and Water for Africa UK provides support in the form of both cash grants and, in the case of the clinics we support in Sierra Leone, life-saving, high quality medications.

  • Specialist clinical treatment at three short-stay residential centres in Shropshire, Surrey and Ayrshire.
  • Community outreach – delivered through an expanding network of Mental Health Practitioners, Community Psychiatric Nurses, and Regional Welfare Officers.

Compassion in World Farming

Putting Compassion on the map

Join fellow Compassion in World Farming supporters by putting your best foot forward on Saturday 12th May as part of the sponsored walking event Just Walk.

Compassion has been campaigning to end factory farming since 1967. Over the past 40 years we have made a significant change to millions of animals farmed for food across the globe.

2 out of 3 farm animals on the planet are factory farmed. Around 40 billion intensively farmed animals are slaughtered globally each year. That’s around 100 million every day; around 4.5 million every year; around 76,000 every minute and over 1,200 every second.

Let’s take steps together and stamp out factory farming

Cure Parkinsons

The aim of The Cure Parkinson’s Trust is to put people who live with Parkinson’s back in control of their lives. Parkinson’s is a life sentence and there is no parole. For us, the people living with the condition, the question is not simply a matter of ‘Will we cure Parkinson’s?’... The bigger issue is ‘When will we cure Parkinson’s?’ The Cure Parkinson's Trust invests in under-resourced and under-funded research projects that offer real hope of a cure for Parkinson's in the future. There is science out there now which can make a difference, and we can all help in the drive to accelerate it. Support us today ……

Cystic Fibrosis

Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is the UK’s most common life-threatening inherited disease affecting over 8,500 young people in the UK. CF is caused by a defective gene that clogs the internal organs, especially the lungs and digestive system, with thick sticky mucus resulting in chronic infections and inflammation in the lungs and difficulty digesting food. Three children die from the effects of Cystic Fibrosis each week in this country. At present there is no cure.

Dame Vera Lynn Trust

The Dame Vera Lynn Trust, School for Parents has a unique place in the development of Conductive Education in this country and currently supports around 60 families. School for Parents  works in partnership with parents to educate pre-school children with motor learning difficulties.

For a family to be suddenly and unexpectedly faced with the news that their child is affected by cerebral palsy is a life-altering experience. The special attention that their child will need in his or her early years is vital and early intervention is crucial. A highly skilled and professional team helps parents to recognise their child’s unique qualities and achievements.  Every day is an exciting experience, and parents can talk openly to each other about their child’s activities, sharing an understanding of each other’s situation.  We have to raise £450,000 every year to provide this vital service and the Trust receives no statutory funding.

Dreamflight

Dreamflight is a registered UK charity that changes young lives through taking seriously ill and disabled children, without their parents, on the holiday of a lifetime to Orlando, Florida.

Once a year, 192 deserving children from all over the UK, accompanied by a team of medical carers, board a chartered Boeing 747 and head to Florida to spend 10 magical days of fun and excitement. Many children could not undertake such a trip without the support of the army of doctors, nurses, physiotherapists and non-medical volunteers who care for the children 24 hours a day.

Dreamflight is not just a holiday. The children leave their families behind giving them an opportunity to discover independence, confidence, and a whole new outlook on life. Often for the first time, these children realise that they are not alone, and they are not the odd one out. They see children around them who have also suffered, they gain perspective, and experience things they never thought possible.  Dreamflight does something that medicine can't.

This is achieved through providing, promoting and advancing children's rights to basic necessities, including education and healthcare.  HOPE supports a number of projects; we are supporting the Kidzone Orphanage.

Kidzone is situated close to the Nairobi slums in Kenya and is home to 23 orphaned girls (aged 5-18). Hurstwood Park League of Friends

"My name is Brian Gubbin, I have been Chairman of The League of Friends of Hurstwood Park Neurological Centre, Haywards Heath since 1994.  When I took over as Chairman, I promised the Committee that I would take this wonderful Centre forward and upwards, this I am sure has been achieved with a lot of hard work, wonderful support from Patients, their Relatives and Friends. It now has worldwide recognition and is the only Operating Theatre for Neuro-surgery in the South East of England.

The Surgeons have benefited over the last few years with some amazing state of the art equipment, the Doctors and Nurses have received what they have wanted via 'Matron's Wish List' which is submitted to every Committee meeting and I am very proud of the fact we have not had to refuse any request so far.  The Patients have benefited with many comforts, albeit beds, pillows etc, blood pressure monitors and lockers in which to keep their personal belongings, the Relatives Rest Room has been totally updated with new flooring and furniture, for them to relax (if this is possible) whilst waiting for news of their loved ones.

The Gardens have been a great success, these were the brain child of my wife, Sue who has been a great help and support to me over these past years. I have said I will carry on as Chairman as long as I am wanted or until the Centre is moved to Brighton, this will not be for a number of years.   I hope you enjoy our website and can always get in touch for anything via our Contact Page."

I CAN

I CAN is the children’s communication charity.  Our vision is a world where all children and young people who struggle to communicate get the help they need to have a happy childhood and fulfil their potential.  Our mission is to ensure no child is left out or behind because of a difficulty communicating.

In the UK, 1 in 10 children have a difficulty communicating.  This is either a primary problem caused by genetic factors or damage to the developing brain, or a feature of a disability for example cerebral palsy or Asperger’s syndrome.  This means that at least two or three children are struggling in every class. Left unsupported children who struggle to communicate can have very poor outcomes.  It affects them severely, affects them early and can affect them for life. But with support outcomes can be very positive.  For more information on what we do to help, visit www.ican.org.uk

Kids Company

Kids Company was established by Camila Batmanghelidjh in 1996. We provide practical, emotional and educational support to vulnerable inner-city children and young people. Many of the 14,000 children we support have experienced severe and multiple trauma. Often these are ‘lone children’ living in chronic deprivation, with little or no support from the adults in their family.

We support these incredibly courageous children and young people by offering a safe, caring, family environment. We deliver services in 38 inner-city schools, two street-level centres, an early intervention therapy house and an over 16s educational academy. In 2007 Kids Company was awarded the Liberty and Justice Human Rights Award. Visit our website at www.kidsco.org.uk

Kids for Kids

KIDS FOR KIDS helps children the world has forgotten, children in Darfur, Sudan, who live lives of inexcusable, and unimaginable, hardship. We are the only organisation created specially to help the children of Darfur, living out of sight of the world in the remote villages. Children who have never seen a toy, who have no books, no bed, often not even a blanket, who have little chance of education and, worst of all, who walk miles for every drop of water. Key to our help is our Goat Loan Project - we lend 6 goats to a family so that the children have milk, often for the first time in their lives. After 2 years they pass on 6 offspring to another family. Simple help that makes an enormous difference particularly now when inflation in Darfur is soaring and the price of a goat - just £22 ($40) is beyond a mother's dreams.

Kidscape

Kidscape work to prevent the abuse and exploitation of children. Though we are known for providing information about street safety and child abuse, we have a special interest in and experience with bullied children, bullying that may take the form of emotional, physical, or cyber attacks. Always a part of school life, bullying affects, according to a recent national survey, almost three-quarters of children. Not all of these receive the direct attentions of bullies, but learning can be seriously affected if children witness or participate in aggression.

Make-A-Wish

Make-A-Wish Foundation® UK grants magical wishes to children and young people fighting life-threatening illnesses. Since being established in the UK in 1986, we have granted over 6,400 wishes.

There are over 20,000 children in the UK living with a life-threatening illness. We believe that every one of them deserves to experience the magic of a Make-A-Wish wish – and they are truly magical.

This year, around 1,200 children will turn to Make-A-Wish to have their special wish granted – we need to raise over £5.5 million per year to continue granting these magical wishes.

Make-A-Wish receives no government funding or lottery grants, relying on the generous donations of the public and that's why, for our charity, every donation really counts.

Malaika Kids

The vision of Malaika Kids is to care for as many Aids orphans in Tanzania as we can, giving them a home, medical care and education.  Some children are fostered in the community with relatives and supported with food, school uniforms and books.  Others will live in family houses in our Childrens Village until they are able to be self-sufficient.  A caring environment, good food, an education and skills training are our priorities.  Malaika Kids is a small charity run entirely by volunteers and with tiny expenses (under 3% of income) so we believe we provide excellent value for money to fundraisers and their sponsors.

Every day, thousands of young children across Africa, have their lives shattered by the death of a parent through HIV/Aids. Their turmoil begins before death, it starts while nursing their sick mother or father and enduring the insufferable agony of not being able to do anything to make and stop. Then being left completely alone, vulnerable and without hope.

Since we began, just four years ago, Sentebale (which means ‘forget me not’) has changed the lives of thousands of children through care, health and education – giving children hope and the opportunity to begin to enjoy their childhood.

St John Ambulance

Our vision is that everyone who needs it should receive first aid from those around them. No one should suffer for the lack of trained first aiders. We have over 44,000 life saving volunteers.

St Mungo's

St Mungo's opens doors for homeless people. Mainly based in London and the South, we provide over 100 accommodation and support projects day in, day out.  We run emergency services - including street outreach teams, emergency shelters for rough sleepers and hostels.

We support homeless people in their recovery - opening the door to safe housing, drug and alcohol support and physical and mental health care. We provide more help for homeless people in gaining life skills than any other charity - from job training to independent living skills in our 'semi-independent' houses.

Preventing homelessness is very important to us. Our 'complex needs' housing provides safe and supportive homes for nearly 400 vulnerable people. Our community support teams work with thousands of people at risk - including former rough sleepers.

By opening our doors, and by opening the doors to services within St Mungo's and in the broader community, we are able to help thousands of homeless people change their lives for good every year.

St. David's Foundation Hospice Care

St. David's Foundation Hospice Care has been providing community-based hospice care for people with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses, and their families, in South East Wales, since 1979. .In addition to the four teams of Clinical Nurse Specialists, St. David's Foundation Hospice Care has a Hospice at Home team of nurses and healthcare assistants who provide hands-on care for our patients.

St. David's Foundation Hospice Care wishes to provide our patients with real choice about where they receive their care and their place of death but this does have financial implications for the Charity.  It costs St. David's Foundation Hospice Care approximately £5 million each year to provide our services and we receive less than 20% of this from the NHS.  In order to raise much needed funds we have 27 charity shops, a weekly lottery, and organise many fundraising events throughout the year

St. Luke's Hospice

St. Luke’s provides specialist care for people who have an advanced disease, as well as those who love and care for them, in a warm caring and friendly environment.

The Hospice is a registered charity serving Basildon and Thurrock local Authority districts. We make no charge to patients or their families for any of the services provided. We commenced as a community project and are still sustained today by the community we serve.

Without the generosity of businesses, clubs, organisations and individuals we could not continue to provide a quality and much–needed care service.

Target Tuberculosis

We are Target Tuberculosis and our vision is a world free from TB. Here in the UK we think of TB as a disease that has been eradicated but the reality is TB is still one of the world’s biggest killer diseases, with 9 million new cases every year.  Despite being preventable and curable, 2 million people will needlessly die of TB this year alone.  Our mission is to address the health, social and economic impact of the global TB epidemic. We are based in Brighton but we work with local partners in countries across Africa and Asia to reach some of the most isolated and impoverished communities in the world.

Teenage Cancer Trust

At Teenage Cancer Trust, we understand that young people with cancer require specialist care.

We know how damaging it is to take a young person away from their everyday life, their friends, their environment, their family – and put them in a cancer ward with small children or older people.  Young people have a much better chance in their fight against cancer if they are treated by teenage cancer experts, in an environment tailored to their needs. So we’re working every day to make that happen.

Teenage Cancer Trust

Teenage Cancer Trust

Teenage Cancer Trust is devoted to improving the lives of teenagers and young adults coping with cancer in the UK, focusing on the needs of young people and their families at every stage of the cancer journey. Teenagers can get some of the most aggressive forms of cancer and survival rates for this age group still fall below those for children and adults. Usually placed on a children’s ward or with elderly patients, their specific needs are often neglected. So we build specialist units in NHS hospitals providing expert medical treatment, professional care and essential emotional support.

The Stroke Association

The Stroke Association is the only UK wide charity solely concerned with combating stroke in people of all ages. Across the UK we help stroke survivors and their families directly through our Life After Stroke Services, as well as being the leading funding into research against stroke and campaigning to raise awareness about stroke.

>Every year an estimated 150,000 people in the UK have a stroke – that’s one every 5-minutes. Stroke is the third biggest killer in the UK, and the leading cause of adult disability.

>However, up to 40% of all strokes can be prevented. By watching what you eat, taking regular exercise, stopping smoking, drinking in moderation and watching your blood pressure you can have a positive effect on your stroke risk.

Wessex Heartbeat

Wessex Heartbeat was established in 1992 and thanks to the generosity of many individuals and organisations over the years, we have been able to make a real difference to the care of the patients of the Wessex Cardiac Centre (WCC) in Southampton. Now a Centre of Excellence, the WCC treats over 20,000 patients annually and around 1000 babies and children born with congenital heart defects. Cardiovascular disease causes nearly 40% of all deaths annually in the UK. Our Mission is to ensure that everyone affected by heart conditions receives the best possible support.
