The Perry-Castañeda Library Map Collection. The Perry-Castañeda Library Map Collection (PCL 1.306) is a general collection of more than 250,000 maps covering all areas of the world. Many of the maps are included in our online catalog, UTNetCAT. More than 5,000 map images from our collection are also available online.

Stanfords was established in 1853 by Edward Stanford, map seller. Today, 150 years on, Stanfords is the UK's leading specialist retailer of maps and travel books. Stanfords' flagship store in London's Covent Garden first opened its doors in January 1901 and today carries our complete range of maps, books and travel related goods. In addition, Stanfords has a store in Bristol and one in Manchester which offer similar stock profiles to that of the flagship store.

5. Expedition Organisations:

National Geographic. On the evening of January 13, 1888, thirty-three men traveled on foot, horseback, and in horse drawn carriages through the streets of Washington to the Cosmos Club, then on Lafayette Square across from the White House. They convened around a large mahogany table to discuss “the advisability of organizing a society for the increase and diffusion of geographical knowledge.” The entity they were about to create would become the largest nonprofit scientific and educational institution in the world.

Raleigh International is a youth development charity which inspires people from all backgrounds and nationalities to discover their full potential by working together on challenging environmental and community projects around the world. We run 3-month expeditions that are part of a longer programme of training weekends and workshops prior to expedition. The training concentrates on personal development, cultural awareness, global issues and preparing people for expedition life.

The Royal Geographical Society (with The Institute of British Geographers) is the Learned Society representing Geography and geographers. It was founded in 1830 for the advancement of geographical science and has been among the most active of the learned societies ever since. The largest geographical society in Europe, and one of the largest in the world, the RGS-IBG operates at a regional, national and international scale.

Go Outdoors. The Outdoor Industries Association website - for anyone interested in outdoor activities and gear designed to ensure an enjoyable, active, outdoor experience. The Outdoor Industries Association is the lead trade body for manufacturers and retailers of outdoor clothing and equipment.

6. Mountain Rescue Organisations:

The Mountain Rescue Council (MRC). The Mountain Rescue Council of England and Wales is the national co-ordinating body, of which the regional bodies are members together with the British Cave Rescue Council and the Search and Rescue Dog Associations. The membership of the Council extends to cover the Association of Chief Police Officers, HM Coastguard, RAF Search and Rescue, Ofcom, the Fire Service Inspectorate, The Sports Council and the Association of Chief Ambulance Officers. It is again a voluntary body and a registered charity. Its main function is to liase on behalf of the teams with the various government departments in the running of mountain and cave rescue and to arrange such items as the provision of communications, stretchers and first aid equipment, and the provision of accident insurance for team members when they are training or operational.

Patterdale Mountain Rescue. The Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team based in the English Lake District is composed entirely of volunteers and provides a rescue service to all who venture on the hills and high places.

Keswick Mountain Rescue Team comprises 43 members, all unpaid volunteers, who are available at all times of the day and night, 365 days per year, to assist those in distress and lost on the mountains of the Lake District. Typically we attend between 70 and 80 callouts each year. There is an enormous amount of 'unseen' work which goes on behind the scenes. Training takes place every week and equipment is checked and maintained constantly so that we are always in a state of readiness to leave at a moment's notice for the next job. We are a registered charity. There is much work to be done in raising funds to support the work which we do.

The Dublin & Wicklow Mountain Rescue Team (DWMRT) has its origins in the An Oige MRT, which was formed during the early 1960's and was one of the earliest MRT's in Ireland along with Kerry MRT, Tramore SCRT and Mourne MRT. As the An Oige Team, the members were involved in numerous rescues in the Wicklow Mountains from the 60's to the early 80's. A substantial core of the current DWMRT members, who were active members in the An Oige Team have been providing a rescue service in the Wicklow and surrounding Mountains for almost 40 years.

Association of Lowland Search and Rescue. The principal aims of the organisation are: To promote and co-ordinate adequate search and rescue arrangements in the lowland areas of the United Kingdom and its offshore islands. To assist and advise statutory bodies in lowland search and rescue work. To promote and encourage discourse and co-operation between any and all search and rescue organisations in the United Kingdom.

202 Squadron RAF Search and Rescue. The primary role of RAF search and rescue is the recovery of downed military aviators, but in peacetime its aircraft are available all year round for use in civilian distress incidents. Indeed, since 1973, over 95% of the rescues carried out by 202 Squadron have been civilian incidents. In 2001 D Flt marked its 5000th rescue. This was the recovery of a fallen climber in the Highlands of Scotland who had suffered a dislocated shoulder. It was one of 5 rescues that D Flt had been tasked with on that particular day. The rescues carried out over the years by 202 Squadron have included a wide variety of incidents involving rescuing casualties from: aircraft, fishing trawlers, ferries, oil rigs, mountainous terrain, cliffs and the waters surrounding Scotland.

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution saves lives at sea. Our volunteer crews are funded entirely by voluntary donations and we provide a 24-hour service around the coast of the UK and Republic of Ireland.

HM Coastguard (HMCG) is a part of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) which in turn is an executive agency of the Department for Transport (DfT). The MCA and HMCG are responsible for safeguarding approximately 10,500 miles of UK Coastline and thousands of square miles of sea.

The Search and Rescue Society of British Columbia. SARBC is a non-profit, professional, uniformed organization which is funded by corporate sponsors, service clubs and contributions from the general public. An Operations Center is located in Victoria for all land and inland water requests. Assistance offered to SAR Groups, Law Enforcement agencies and Missing Childrens Organizations is provided by the Society through the Overhead Management Team, or by the Special Services Unit (SSU)for physical response.

East West Rescue (EWR) is India's first and largest medical assistance company which provides multiple services for the ill or injured in India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Maldives and Pakistan. Our network of medical care includes over 150 cities in the countries we cover.

7. Expedition Medical Resources:

British Travel Health Association (BTHA). The Specialty of Travel Medicine has evolved in response to the health issues raised by the extraordinary increase in International travel over the past 20-30 years. Travel medicine is a truly multidisciplinary specialty and a need for close participation of the experts involved was the stimulus behind the development of the BTHA. Sir Kenneth Calman launched the Association on May 28th 1998 at the Royal Geographical Society, London. It has since gone from strength to strength and now has some 500 members representing most of the disciplines that comprise the specialty.

CDC (Centres for Disease Control and Prevention). American agency of the Department of Health and Human Resources. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is recognized as the lead federal agency for protecting the health and safety of people - at home and abroad, providing credible information to enhance health decisions, and promoting health through strong partnerships. CDC serves as the national focus for developing and applying disease prevention and control, environmental health, and health promotion and education activities designed to improve the health of the people of the United States.

The Hospital for Tropical Diseases (HTD) is a world centre of excellence dedicated to prevention, treatment and training. The site provides general advice and tips on travel health for short- and long-stay travellers, and information on travel health products such as first aid kits for backpackers.

Health A to Z. Provides lifestyle modification programs in a consumer-empowered environment for Employer Groups, Health Plans, Hospitals, Pharmaceutical Companies and other organizations. Our online health and wellness programs, tools, information and technology development services help these organizations meet their goals for their specific populations.

The Health Protection Agency Infectious diseases are a continuing threat to the health of the UK public. Forty per cent of people in England consult a health professional each year because of infection, and infections account for 70,000 deaths each year. The situation is continually changing and new threats can arise at any time. Some infections are becoming resistant to drugs. Air travel and international trade mean that diseases can be rapidly spread internationally.

International Society of Travel Medicine. The International Society of Travel Medicine (ISTM) is committed to the promotion of healthy and safe travel. In cooperation with national and international health care providers, academic centers, the travel industry and the media, ISTM advocates and facilitates education, service, and research activities in the field of travel medicine. This includes: preventive and curative medicine within many specialties such as tropical medicine, infectious diseases, high altitude physiology, travel related obstetrics, psychiatry, occupational health, military and migration medicine, and environmental health.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies is the world's largest humanitarian organisation, with 181 member National Societies. All our work is guided by seven fundamental principles; humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity and universality.

The International Society for Mountain Medicine was founded in 1985, and its goals are to bring together physicians, scientists and allied professionals interested in mountain medicine, to encourage research on all aspects of mountains, mountain peoples and mountaineers and to spread scientific and practical information about mountain medicine around the world.

MASTA. Very reliable information from the non-profit organisation Medical Advisory Services for Travellers Abroad.

MERLIN Medical Relief Agency. Merlin is a UK-based, non-profit, non-partisan charity, which provides lifesaving healthcare for people in crises and disaster situations around the world. Merlin specialise in reaching the poorest countries with the most difficult environments and complex emergencies, supporting vulnerable people when the local infrastructure has broken down.

The National Travel Health Network and Centre, NaTHNaC, has been created to promote clinical standards in travel medicine with the goal of 'protecting the health of the British traveller'. It has been funded by the Department of Health, England, and is in partnership with the network founders.

Rapid UK. The relief of human suffering and distress in any part of the world resulting from disaster of any kind, and the protection and preservation of human life, in particular but not exclusively, by providing suitably trained and experienced response teams free of charge upon receipt of requests for assistance.

Scottish National Health Service. The 'fit for travel' website provides travel health information for people travelling abroad from the UK. The website has current news, general advice for travellers and advice on malaria prevention, and provides links to further information.

Travel Health Online. An established American site providing travel health advice.

Travel Health. The information and advice on this site is developed by UK Practice Nurse Liz Rosies, RGN MSc (Trav Med). Liz is a member of the British Travel Health Association, the International Society of Travel Medicine, and the Royal College of Nursing.

Tropical Screening. Commercial site offering online advice while you are abroad plus clinical service when you return. Run by seriously experienced travelling doctors.

TRAVAX. TRAVAX is maintained and continually updated by the Travel Medicine Division of the Scottish Centre for Infection and Environmental Health (SCIEH). It is a resource provided by the National Health Service for Health Care Professionals primarily within the United Kingdom. (This service should not be confused with the service provided in the USA by Shoreland, Inc. which also uses the name 'TRAVAX').

The Tropical Medical Bureau, Eire. Ireland and Irish People are world leaders in providing aid at all levels to third world and developing countries. The Tropical Medical Bureau provides many of Irelands leading Non-government (NGO) and Government Agencies with important health and medical services.

The World Health Organization is the United Nations specialized agency for health. It was established on 7 April 1948. WHO's objective, as set out in its Constitution, is the attainment by all peoples of the highest possible level of health. Health is defined in WHO's Constitution as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.

Virtual Hospital is a digital health sciences library created in 1992 at the University of Iowa to help meet the information needs of health care providers and patients. The goal of the Virtual Hospital digital library is to make the Internet a useful medical reference and health promotion tool for health care providers and patients. The Virtual Hospital digital library contains thousands of textbooks and booklets for health care providers and patients.

AfriCam. In September 1998 AfriCam started its first live transmissions from a waterhole in Djuma Game Reserve, part of the Greater Kruger National Park.
