Iceland Ultra race 2010

ATD Director Mark Hannaford has just returned back from the Iceland Laugavegur Ultra Marathon a beautiful course stretching from Landmannalaugar in the highlands to Thorsmörk, a natural conservation area.

The adventure race blazes a trail through moss fields, meadows of wool grass, steam springs, and bizarre lava formations where various blossoms defy the raw climate.

Do not be fooled by the iconic beauty of this mountain marathon course. This is a tough mountain adventure challenge and having a good race plan is essential.  It’s a 55km race that is multi terrain  (sand, gravel, grass, snow, ice, rivers and streams).  It’s a beautiful run and to top it all off – after the race you get to spend the morning at the http://www.bluelagoon.com – just what’s needed for those tired muscles.

Full race results can be found here.

Laugavegur Ultra Marathon – Iceland race report 2009

Iceland Laugavegur Ultra Marathon

July 2009 saw our second Across the Divide group line up on the start line at 0900 wondering exactly what they had let themselves in for. The small group of 7 runners had a mixture of experienced Ultra runners and those completely new to the sport, and represented the UK, Canada and the States. The previous day we held an event briefing covering a detailed course description, and a thorough medical brief which helped prepare our runners to run a good race. Thankfully the weather was kind to us compared to last year and it was a nice temperature at the start with no uncontrollable shivering before the race organisers sent us off running up the first steep section. The field was twice the size as last year with many more local runners taking part creating a great atmosphere at the start line.

PT-03 Winter Cold Environment Running Shoe Review by Steve Clark

Across the Divide needed to find a shoe that we could recommend to participants taking part in our series of Ultra Marathons.  These races take part in some extreme and inhospitable environments and so I have given the PT-03 shoe a real battering over the last 6 months to see if they can live up to their claim of being built to survive.

The first major test for them was the 55km Laugavegur Ultra Marathon in Iceland. This punishing course took the shoes through multi terrain of sand, gravel, grass, volcanic mud, scree, snow, ice, rocky trails and glacial fed streams and rivers.  At the end of the race I was really impressed with how well they performed and how comfortable they actually were.

TRAINING FOR AN ULTRA MARATHON – STEVE CLARK

DESIGNING YOUR TRAINING PROGRAMME – PART ONE

It is hoped that this article will give the first time ultra marathon runner some pointers about how to approach a training programme for their first race.  Because the prospect of completing an ultra is so daunting, many runners set an unrealistic training programme that involves too much training too soon.  This will more often than not lead to an early injury that prevents the runner from training.

The ideal programme should allow for a low training load for the first three to six months to allow your body to adapt slowly to the training pressures you will undergo.

Why we run ultra marathons by Steve Clark

The first thing that people ask me with when I talk about running ultra marathons is why I do it?  Most just cannot comprehend why anyone would enjoy such a sport.  This is not an easy question to answer because let’s face it, running further than a marathon is a very painful experience and hardly what most people would class as a fun day out.

On a very basic level marathons just don’t do it for me.  I have only ever run two, the London and Edinburgh marathons, and whilst both are great events, I had no desire to run another.  All I was ever going to do was try and beat my own time by training harder and quite frankly I think that there is a whole lot more to life than running.

Laugavegur Ultra Marathon

Is a 55km footrace along the most popular hiking trail in Iceland, a route that normally takes 4 days to complete. Now 55km doesn’t actually sound that far, as really it is just a bit more than a marathon. Looking on the course records the warning bells started to sound as the fastest 10 finishers in 2006 took between 5:26 and 6:06 hours to complete the course. I didn’t know quite what to expect, although I imagined it had to be tough for such slow times. Little did I know but I was in for quite a challenge.
