Why I’m taking part in Just Walk. By Katie Bizzey

My daughter Laura has a rare, non-treatable strain of Muscular Dystrophy.  There is nothing that can be done to take this away from her and as her Mum I carry a frustrating sadness.  Through Muscular Dystrophy Campaign, I embarked on a fundraising trek in 2007 across the Sahara Desert.  You could say ‘The Rest is History’ – but that  would be dull!

Across The Divide was the appointed adventure trekking leadership company who took us all safely into the unknown and safely home again.  But I had found a fabulous way to eleviate some of the frustrations a mother carries when she cant help her child: walking for charity!

But with the usual  work and family comittments I cant just shoot off to far flung parts all the time.  Then someone suggested Across The Divide’s annual Just Walk event!  Sorted!  Choice of route length to suit every ability, one simple registration fee and no minimum amount to raise and all for a charity of your choice!  The registration is more of a ‘look after me for the day’ fee – medics, snacks, motivation, easy to follow routes and general upbeat TLC.  With ATD arranging and managing the event there is absolutely no cost to the charities.  Brilliant.  Sign up, turn up, Just Walk, collect sponsorhip, give to charity!  Leaving plenty of time to train for the next event!

I have successfully achieved the long 60km route twice, walking with friends late into the evening.  An amazing day and a fair challenge.  But last year I was honoured to accompany my daughter on the small 10km route.  It was a major endeavour for her, but a feat she achieved with glee helped along by two school friends, a lot of laughs, a huge picnic and ATD staff cheering her in at the finish line.  Laura raised £1900 for her achievement in aid of Muscular Dystrophy Campaign.

Just Walk is an event for all.  A beautiful walk of varying lengths achievable for all age groups and abilities while encompassing maximum levels of professional back-up.

Laura is walking the 10km route again in 2011, I shall be proudly by her side – so see you there!
