About Mexico

Print this panel email to a friend

Charity projects or trekking, Mexico has it all! An incredible mix of culture and nature waiting to be discovered by you. We have deliberately chosen the location of our charity challenges to be away from the main tourist trail - in the more remote and inaccessible areas life goes on, little changed by the modern world.

Without question, our charity challenges will blow away any preconceptions that you might have had about Mexico. They will give you a glimpse of an ancient Indian way-of-life that has changed little over the years.

'Mexico is a traveller's paradise, crammed with a multitude of opposing identities: desert landscapes, snow-capped volcanoes, ancient ruins, teeming industrialised cities, time-warped colonial towns, glitzy resorts, lonely beaches and a world-beating collection of flora and fauna'. Lonely Planet

Mexico Rainforest and Volcano Charity Trek

This trek has fantastic views from the tops of high extinct volcanoes, and takes a trail through low lying sub-tropical rainforest and traditional Indian villages nestled in hidden gorges. It gives a glimpse of an ancient Indian way-of-life that has changed little over the years. A day of rafting on the Rio Pescades and Antigua through a beautiful canyon of volcanic rock and tropical vegetation completes our trek.

Responsible Tourism

In Mexico our charity walks and expeditions have contributed a great deal to both the local community and impacted positively on the conservation of the fragile eco-system. The area is under strong pressure from farmers to be ploughed up and planted with crops. The activities of Across the Divide, its partnership with local people and its charity challenges have helped to alleviate this pressure by proving that, even in an area as remote as this, tourism can pay and provide an alternative sustainable source of income. It is a fact that the benefits of your charity trek, walk or challenge are far more widely reaching than you can ever imagine. How we know Mexico

Across the Divide has been in in Central America providing charity bike rides and charity challenge expeditions for over half a decade now and has built up one of the best equipped and trained support teams in South America with a great sense of humour and respect for their environment.

Our charity treks, charity projects and charity bike rides work hand-in-hand with local communities and companies to provide a win-win situation for all concerned. We have helped to build covered eating areas, which are then used by the local community as meeting rooms and classrooms, fixed toilets used to promote public health and trekking trails.

Our local charity challenge team is a dedicated and passionate collection of eclectic individuals from logistics specialists, naturalists and musicians who will show you a true 'Mexican Experience'.

Other highlights include:

See Mexico's Monarch butterflies
Whales aren't the only creatures who head south for the winter. Mexico's most famous protected winter residents are a bit more delicate. The sanctuaries that protect the winter home of the Monarch butterfly are the most famous in Mexico. This species leaves its Canadian and American homes to take up residence in only a few areas of Central Mexico each winter. The most visited sanctuary is El Rosario, and the best place to base yourself is the town of Angangueo, an old mining town.

Swim the desert
Olympic trainees take note - you can practice your butterfly just about anywhere, even when surrounded by desert sands. Of course, that's only if you're in Mexico's Cuatro Ciinegas Reserve. Declared a protected area in 1995, the reserve's labyrinth of underground rivers has produced a large number of aquatic pools (many more than the "four lagoons" that give the town its name). After your swim, climb up the limestone sierras for a spectacular view of the valley.

Leave the Hard Rock behind
Just a two-hour drive from the Americana of Cancun, Mayan ruins pepper the Yucatan landscape. True, you're fighting the Cancun crowds (and the Mexican heat) to see them, but the stepped pyramids and crumbling sculptures transport you to a time that's about as far from the beach resorts as you can get. Most people head forChichen Itza and Tulum, where reconstruction is stopping decay and giving better insight into Mayan daily life. Another site, Coba, serves up 80 square miles of ruins, five lakes, and the tallest pyramid on the peninsula. Take the climb — the top gives you a great span of jungle, and the tops of other ruins reach above the canopy. To lose the crowds, try the ruins at Muyil, a rarely visited site that's also a bird-watching haven.
