About Costa Rica
|
|
Costa Rica is a tiny country but one of the most ecologically and climactically diverse in the world. It is home to 5% of all plant and animal species on the planet, with natural habitats spanning rainforest, volcanoes, mountains and coastal zones.

| Jungle Medicine Course Expedition Medicine's Jungle Medical Skills course takes place in the primary rainforest of Costa Rica, in Central America. Costa Rica's diverse and beautiful jungle environment provides the perfect backdrop to the course which represents, we believe, one of the best-presented and comprehensive jungle medical skills courses in the world. The course calls on the knowledge of jungle medicine experts and the skills of British Special Forces, Royal Marine instructors, tropical medicine and fauna and flora experts. There is no better way to prepare yourself for the rigours of wilderness medicine, and nowhere better than the jungles of Costa Rica. *minimum number required. Developed for medical professionals or advanced medics working in tropical or jungle environments, the course aims to introduce participants to the skills required to be a valuable member of a jungle expeditionary team, and to care for and treat injuries and illnesses likely to occur in this harsh environment. We will use the natural environment as our classroom, teaching the essential expedition medical skills required to care for and treat injuries and illnesses likely to occur in this unforgiving environment. Other
highlights
Tortuguero and the Atlantic Coast... It will be the turtles that will lure you to this park, a prime nesting site for green, leatherback, and hawksbill reptiles, who arrive mostly between July and September each year to lay their eggs on the beach. You'll have to take to the waters to get here too, since the park's accessible only by boat. But the journey's worth it! On a really good night, the beach can be littered with turtles. Explore Costa Rica's Volcanic Craters.
At 3,432 meters, Irazu is Costa Rica's highest volcano. It is also
the site of a spectacular scene. Fumaroles emit steam and gas in the
natural cauldrons, and there are five of these craters in Volcan Irazu
National Park (though only one is considered active). |
The beach, of course, has become an essential ecological center, and as a result, almost 19,000 hectares were set aside as national park in 1970. Besides the famous turtles, the park also attracts avine species, including green macawas, great curasswos, and migratory birds from North America. Other denizens include tapirs, jaguars, and monkeys - West Indian manatees are frequently spotted in the canals. The small town has frequent blackouts, so be sure to have your flashlight handy Explore Monteverd. Cloud forest that just goes on and on! Monteverde is the sole reason that many people travel to Costa Rica, and with good reason. This well-known private reserve, which covers 22,000 Costa Rican hectares, has more than 400 bird species (including the quetzal, which is best seen in the early morning between January and May), monkeys, tapirs, and felines, all in its dense, dark boundaries. The reserve was initially created as a watershed in 1951 when Quakers arrived in the area, and in 1972 it was expanded and made into the formal reserve. Visitors are limited to one hundred at a time so arrive early or prepare to spend extra time at the visitor's centre. There are many well-marked trails; detailed information is available at the visitor's centre. |
