Denali Climb
Led by Simon Yates of 'Touching the Void' fame. In asssociation with the American Alpine Institute. Although much of the route is straightforward, consisting mostly of strenuous glacier walking, an ascent is a serious proposition. The most difficult section - a 45 degree snow and ice slope above the 14,000 foot camp – is always fixed with rope and is jumared. Denali lies close to the Pacific Ocean and therefore suffers from variable weather. Large and prolonged storms regularly affect the mountain, and being almost on the Arctic Circle, temperatures can plummet. However, with twenty-four hour daylight, rapid progress can be made when the weather is good, giving a good chance of reaching the top in the allocated time span. |
